Everyday Use
A Creative Greensboro Sponsored Project
A Creative Greensboro Sponsored Project
Gone are the days of children sitting at the knees of their mothers, grandmothers, and community mothers learning how to sew and quilt. The mass production of clothes has removed the art of sewing from an entire generation of youth. Today, one might not ever hear a person under the age of 30 say, “I made this outfit. I make clothes for my dolls. I know how to sew.” While we know people engage with textiles, we argue sewing has become a specialized interest that a lot of children do not learn as part of their everyday life skills. Part of this is because of the expense associated with sewing and the stigma attached to wearing “homemade clothes.”
The Everyday Use Project was envisioned as a stepping stone for children ages 9-17 to learn how to quilt and sew clothes. Named after Alice Walker's short story Everyday Use, this project encouraged youth to create poetry and quilts as a way to express themselves. Funded by a grant from Creative Greensboro, this project brought the Greensboro Community together for a series of events promoting quilting, literature, and creative writing. Our kick-off event featured quilter Ms. Andreana Coleman and Drs. Hope Jackson and Faye Maor from the Department of English at North Carolina A&T State University.
If you missed the live event, you can view the recording here. We hosted several sewing classes for Guilford County youth, and created a short documentary about the ancestral memory of quilting, you can watch our short documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyK1kJbcGNY
Thank you to Creative Greensboro and our community co-sponsors for supporting this project.
