Griots of the Cloth
A Greensboro Grow Residency
A Greensboro Grow Residency
Welcome to Griots of the Cloth, a GROW (Greensboro Residency for Original Works) Artist Residency exhibit. My name is Kimberly C. Harper, and I am a self-taught fiber artist who starting quilting at the height of COVID. Quilting satisfied my need for self-expression, mindfulness, and control while adjusting to life under COVID-19 restrictions. As my interest in quilting grew, so did my desire to share quilting with my community. Since 2020, I have taught sewing classes, given lectures, and traveled to participate in sew-alongs with other fiber artists. This project is dear to my heart because all the quilts, with the exception of a few, were made for family and friends and tells the story of my COVID experience.
I named my GROW Residency, Griots of the Cloth, because griots in African culture are tasked with maintaining the culture and history of a people through oral storytelling. For me, this exhibit is an extension of the griot tradition. I am telling stories with the fabric I use and celebrating a moment in life with a quilt. My IG is @sankofasewing or @nuttyprofessor1891, and you can find me on Facebook (Kimberly Harper). If you missed the chance to join a class, I will have new classes in 2025. Thank you to Greensboro GROW and all the folks who supported this project.
In solidarity and thread, Kimberly
